The Resilient Class of 2021
ABF Resiliency Project
Students Overcoming Adversity
The Avery Burton Foundation (ABF), a non-profit 501c.3 focused on destigmatizing the conversation around mental health through outreach and educational resources, is pleased to introduce the Avery Burton Foundation Resiliency Project. The project debuts with original web content – including the publication of local Southern Nevada high school senior student scholarship essays. These powerful and poignant stories reveal the adversity teens faced during a pandemic year filled with distance learning, isolation, missed sporting events, self-care tips and more.
Origin Story
The ABF Resiliency Project shines a light on the mental health conditions faced by students and families.
Normally, we would look forward to meeting students at the annual Public Education Foundation (PEF) Scholarship Luncheon, learning about college plans and sharing information about ABF. But this year has been anything but normal. As an alternative to the annual luncheon event, ABF instead invited student scholarship recipients and applicants to participate in the Resiliency Project, showcasing student grit and resiliency.
The goal is to ensure students have their voices heard and inspire hope for others struggling with the mental health toll from isolation during distance learning.
We believe publishing the essays and developing content is a compelling way to put this unusual senior year into perspective, as well as normalize the conversation around mental health through storytelling.
About
To honor Avery Burton’s memory and warn families about the dangers of depression, his family started a scholarship in his name. The Avery Burton Excellence in Academics and Sports Scholarship ensures his legacy will live on through the work of the ABF and storytelling initiatives, including the Resiliency Project, which is working to publish student essays from this year’s record 57 applicants. The goal of the project is to ensure students have their voices heard and inspire hope for others struggling with the mental health toll from isolation as a result of distance learning during the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.
